The Shining Starring Jack Nicholson

The Shining is a novel that was written by Stephen King, the true master of horror. His novel had people sitting on the edge of their seats through the early seventies and into nineteen eighty. That is when the reign of terror went a step further and the movie was made.

The film was released during the spring and terrified watchers during the entire summer. It was so successful that people were actually memorizing the lines and phrases. In the end the flick won many nominations and one award from the academy.

The storyline involved a character named Jack Torrance, his spouse, and son. After succumbing to alcoholism he takes his family to live in a large, haunted Colorado hotel. There he will act as caretaker during the off season when there is nobody living in it. The job seems like a great way to get away, but they will soon realize the buildings horrifying past.

Danny, the couple's child, is already aware that something is not quite right. He had visions of tragedies that had taken place years earlier. His special gift had warned him about the evil that was waiting for his family. After the group moves in those prophecies begin coming true.

Jack Nicholson is highly responsible for the success of this movie. His realistic acting had the audience sitting on the edges of their seats. He portrayed his evil character so well that many thought he truly was sinister.

Film highlights

The film had many moments worth remembering. Some of these sent chills up audience member's spines. Others simply filled their nights with vivid dreams of the ever present evil.

One memory evoking phrases of the film has to be the young son, Danny, repetitious phrase redrum. This was murder spelled backwards and was repeated by the youngster after going into a hypnotic trance. It was not only disturbing to his young mother, but sent chills up many viewers' spines.

Anyone who has seen this flick cannot forget the ghostly encounter Danny had with the previous owner's dead twin daughters. He was riding his back through the hotel when he stopped dead. The girls stood at the end of a hallway calling to him. It is a truly chilling moment that gives movie goers that scare they are waiting for.

Soon after encountering the ghostly girls in the upper hall, the young boy wanders into a room where he finds an even more horrifying sight. An old woman who had died in the bathtub was waiting to attack him. When his father investigated the happening he found an attractive young lady who was ready to seduce him. After that moment Jack became evil and set out to hurt his beloved family.

Evil began taking over the man's body and he soon became quite sinister. His wife and son began to worry about him and it was not long before they realized that he meant to kill them. This is evident when he takes an ax and busts through their bedroom door. A chase ensues and the movie comes to a climax.

The Shining is a true horror masterpiece that should not be missed by anyone. Although the film has its bloody moments, there is not nearly as much gore that is found in more current flicks. However, those who watch it are prone to long lasting nightmares. - 38505
